I remember its striking slipperiness, its opaque scales sticking to my fingers as the fish dried in
the air, the heave of its gills slowing. I picked up a rock. Once, twice, three times, I struck the fish
on the side of its head--the rock suddenly light as air in my fingers--before the aching, penny-dark
pull and push of its fish mouth stopped. |
